Types of Tours at Buffalo Trace

There are seven different tours offered at Buffalo Trace. Most require reservations, but they are all free to all visitors over the age of 21.

Each of the seven tours offered focuses on a different area of the distillery process, history, and barreling.

All tours come with a tasting of Buffalo Trace award winning products.

  • The Trace Tour: This is an overview of the history and science of bourbon at Buffalo Trace Distillery. It is the only tour that doesn’t require reservations and runs every hour. This is a great last-minute option if you find yourself looking for something fun to do near Frankfort, KY.
  • The Expansion Tour: The is a limited-run tour that shows the backside of the distillery and the areas that Buffalo Trace is expanding for future growth.
  • Old Taylor Tour: E.H. Taylor was the man who revolutionized the industry and instilled in Buffalo Trace a desire for perfection and purity in the bourbon making process. This tour focuses on his influence and how he helped craft what Buffalo Trace is today.
  • Bourbon Barrel Tour: Get an inside look at the specifications, history, and manufacturing of their unique barrel process. You’ll learn every step of the barrel journey through the distillery and what happens to them when they can no longer be used for bourbon.
  • Arboretum and Botanical Gardens Tour: The Albert B. Blanton Arboretum, Botanical Gardens, & Bird Sanctuary surround the historic 1934 residence and is a National Historic Landmark. They honor tradition by repurposing the original structures and materials. Beautiful landscaping and seasonal plantings breathe new life into this treasured space.
  • Hard Hat Tour: This gives a true behind-the-scenes look into Buffalo Trace and what goes into crafting each glass. You can see the entire process up close from grain delivery to distillation.
  • National Historic Landmark Tour: This educational history tour focuses on Albert B. Blanton’s legacy of operating the distillery before, during, and after Prohibition.

Additional Amenities

Each tour ends at the visitor’s center where there is a gift shop full of gifts, unique barware, food, clothing, and accessories.

The second floor is available for taste testing a few of the Buffalo Trace signature products.

The location itself is easy to find and the large, paved parking lot with clear signage makes parking easy.
